Additional Information
Dating to 1946, this map paints the farmland of the United States, county by county and coast to coast, showing all the country at its farming, with the work of each region, east and west, drawn right onto the land itself.
It is the work of Paul Sample, the American regionalist painter, put out by Associated American Artists of New York, who placed good art in ordinary homes. Like much of his work, it looks fondly on the farms and small towns of rural America.
Across the map the land is shown at work: cattle in the pastures, red barns and tall silos, tractors and ploughs in the long brown furrows, orchards heavy with ripe fruit, and grain ready for the harvest, region by region from sea to shining sea.
This map stands as a testament to the American land and those who work it, offering a window into a mid-century love of the soil's plenty. One of the most idyllic of all maps of rural America, it lends a wholesome, homespun nostalgia to any living room, office, or study.
