Produced in the early years of the post-war period, this Transworld Airlines (TWA) poster features iconic imagery of the city's historic Spanish Catholic Missions as well as the natural features associated with Los Angeles. By 1950 TWA had transformed air travel, and advances made to aviation technology during World War II allowed increased access to international flights with modern amenities for business or pleasure travelers. Howard Hughes took control of TWA in 1939 and would remain in charge until 1960, when he left the company to focus on development projects in Las Vegas. TWA brought on celebrated American commercial artist David Klein who worked on Broadway productions prior to creating posters for TWA during the so-called jet age.
Los Angeles had become the commercial, financial, and cultural center of Southern California and, by the 1950s, had become a hub for aerospace companies that were making significant advances. Klein's work influenced graphic design for decades, and he remains an enduring figure in the form with his Fly TWA campaign poster being featured in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. His work is immediately recognizable and transports the viewer back in time, creating a bond between the past and present.
After the end of World War II, Los Angeles experienced its most considerable population growth as the nation enjoyed significant prosperity. This was spurred by the development of large suburban communities that offered housing for GIs returning from World War II that were starting families and found jobs in LA.
