Additional Information
One of the most prominent faith healers in post-World War II America, William Branham, is pictured here preaching at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, Texas, in 1950, at a pivotal moment in his career that would go on to inspire other spiritual leaders and influence the spread of evangelism and televangelism, which gained popularity in the following decades among Christian Americans. Branham's inter-denominational sermons saw some of the largest audiences for religious gatherings in modern history, and his gospel reached global audiences during his career, which spanned multiple decades and was based on his belief that he had received an angelic visitation in 1946 that called him to spread his religious views.
Branham began his preaching career in 1934 and by the 1950s had reached widespread popularity with his new approach to delivering religious speeches with a vigor and passion that was very popular among communities across the United States before he started reaching international audiences. During the Great Depression, Branham's church was short of funds and often went without compensation for his sermons. However, it was his claims of being a faith healer that truly set him apart. His followers believed he had a divine power to heal medical conditions through his words and interactions, a belief that would shape his career and influence his followers.
This photo captures Branham at the peak of his popularity and prominence and immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible link between the past and present. This is an authentic piece of American Christian history with a unique aesthetic and distinct character.
