Born in 1926, Queen Elizabeth II would go on to become the longest-serving monarch in British history, ascending to the throne in 1952, the same year this portrait was created. Captured at a pivotal moment in the twentieth century, the portrait reflects a Britain still rebuilding in the aftermath of World War II and the extensive bombing campaigns by the German air force. In November 1947, Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark. Their marriage would last seventy-three years, until Philip's passing in 2021.
At just twenty-five years old, Elizabeth became Queen of the United Kingdom and seven Commonwealth realms. Her reign as constitutional monarch spanned significant periods of political and cultural transformation, including The Troubles in Northern Ireland, the decolonization of numerous African nations, and the appointment of over a dozen Prime Ministers. Elizabeth became a global symbol of continuity, tradition, and British diplomacy. Her first overseas tour took place in 1947, the same year as her engagement and twenty-first birthday. Prior to their marriage, Philip renounced his royal titles and converted from the Greek Orthodox Church to the Anglican Church.
