Edgartown bears a rich history and was once a thriving hub for the whaling industry, which supplied oil for energy use throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Today, the town has evolved into a popular destination known for yachting and harbor-side activities. Edgartown is also home to numerous historically preserved buildings, and its storied past remains one of the primary attractions for the thousands of visitors who flock to Martha's Vineyard during the summer months to enjoy its beaches and distinctive architecture. While the island maintains a small population of year-round residents, the number increases significantly during the tourist season, which typically begins on Memorial Day and concludes on Labor Day.
The town's origins trace back to 1642 when Reverend Thomas Mayhew Jr. led a group of settlers to establish a colony following his father's purchase of the island. Originally named Great Harbor, it was later incorporated as Edgar Towne in honor of the presumed heir to the British throne. The success of the whaling industry brought great wealth to the region, and many sea captains constructed grand homes using local lumber, many of which remain preserved as landmarks of the town's maritime heritage.
