This portrait of Wanda Jackson portrays the singer at the height of her fame in nineteen fifty-eight as her star continued to rise with her success in the genres of rock and roll, gospel, and country music, for which she was a preeminent figure during the era, influencing countless musicians and entertainers during her illustrious career, which has spanned decades and continues to inspire and inform performers to this day. Jackson signed with Decca Records in 1954 and had her first hit single, "You Can't Have My Love," which led to her touring with Elvis Presley, a move that would further her career and allow her to gain mainstream attention in the early parts of her career.
Presley and Jackson had a brief romance during which Presley encouraged her to branch out from traditional country music into the new rockabilly style, which merged country and rock and roll to create a new style that remains emblematic of the new culture of the 1950's, which celebrated a form of new American culture centered around hot rod culture and traditional values centered around an idealized vision of the modern America of the time.
