Taken in 1963, this iconic photograph of Civil Rights activist and prominent member of the NAACP, Medgar Evers, remains an enduring image of the catalyzing moment that his death caused as many Americans joined the fight for equality for Black Americans across the United States. Evers became active in the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and rose through its ranks, quickly becoming one of the most recognized figures. Evers challenged the state-sponsored segregation policies at the University of Mississippi when he applied to their law school. Evers was also known for his voting rights advocacy across the American South, and he was awarded the 1963 Springarn Medal from the NAACP.
The award commemorates outstanding achievements for the advancement of the rights of Black Americans and remains a prestigious achievement to this day. Evers was assassinated in 1963, which sparked outrage across the nation, and 5,000 protestors marched in his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who practiced peaceful protests that would mark the era. This image became a symbol within the Civil Rights movement, and prominent activists across the nation memorialized Evers, including James Baldwin, Margaret Walker, Eudora Welty, and Anne Moody.
Evers' legacy remains an enduring reminder of the fight for Civil Rights, and this image captures him at the height of his influence and political power. Evers' widow Myrlie Evers became a prominent voice in the Civil Rights Movement following her husband's assassination and remains a powerful voice from the early generation of activists.
