Additional Information
Perhaps the most recognizable photo of the early nineteen seventies, this image of American President Richard Nixon and one of the most iconic American musicians of all time, Elvis Presley, has become one of the most famous pieces of American culture and is indicative of a turning point both America politically and culturally. As the War in Vietnam continued, there was considerable tension in the United States in 1970 as students and Black Americans' grew weary of the conflict that had been waging, and conscription began to impact the lives of thousands of young men.
This photograph captures both men at the peak of their popularity and success when Nixon awarded Presley an honorary badge as a Federal Agent at Large. Nixon was also experiencing a wave of popularity at this time and was trying to build trust amongst younger Americans by posing with the singer after he had vowed to get America out of Vietnam. His party was making gains across the nation. Elvis had been growing more popular since his controversial debut in the American fifties, where he became a prominent figure bringing Rock and Roll to prominence with inspiration from lesser-known Black artists who hadn't crossed over into mainstream channels.
The distinctive style and both men's spirits are captured in this photo, which remains one of the most enduring images of both men in a single moment as a turning point in American history. The distinctive aesthetic immediately transports the viewer back in time.
