Photographed by Carol M. Highsmith in 2018, this image captures the iconic Portland Oregon sign glowing at dusk above the Burnside Bridge over the Willamette River. Originally installed in 1940 for White Satin Sugar, the neon landmark has become one of the city's most beloved symbols.
Built by Ramsay Signs atop the White Stag Building in Old Town, the display evolved through decades of commercial messaging. In 1957, a leaping stag silhouette crowned the sign when the sportswear company claimed it, and two years later a glowing red nose debuted for Christmas in homage to Rudolph.
Designated a City of Portland Historic Landmark in 1977, the sign survived ownership disputes and periods of darkness before the city acquired it in 2010. The lettering was changed to read simply Portland Oregon, transforming a commercial advertisement into a civic emblem embraced by residents and visitors alike.
Carol M. Highsmith has donated nearly one hundred thousand copyright-free photographs to the Library of Congress since 1992, documenting landmarks across all fifty states through her America Project.
