American politician and humanitarian Jimmy Carter is pictured in his official White House portrait as the 39th President of the United States of America. He served in the White House from 1977 to 1981, a term marked by his unwavering commitment to social justice and equality. Carter's journey to the presidency began when he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and joined the Navy's submarine service. After his military service, he returned to his family's peanut farm in Georgia, where he became a leading voice in the Democratic Party. His strong role in the advancement of the Civil Rights movement, along with his advocacy for other progressive policies, earned him a reputation in the political arena.
On his second day in office, Carter pardoned all individuals who had evaded the draft during the Vietnam War and created a new energy plan that focused on controlling energy prices, advancing renewable technologies, and conservation, which made him famous with many of the more progressive members of his party. However, these views were unfavorable among the interested parties who benefitted from selling fossil fuels. Carter's administration also established the U.S. Department of Energy and Education. The end of Carter's presidency was marked by some notable international events, including the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, a widespread energy crisis, the Three Mile Island incident, and an escalation of the Cold War with a strict grain embargo imposed on the Soviet Union.
