Additional Information
Richard Milhous Nixon was an American politician representing the Republican Party as a representative and senator from the state of California before becoming Vice President under Dwight D. Eisenhower and eventually winning the office of President in 1969. President Nixon began to deescalate the Vietnam War, and the war ended while he was in power. Nixon visited China in 1972 and started to open talks between the two nations to develop foreign policy decisions that would eventually lead to diplomatic terms between the two nations. Domestically, Nixon became most known for spearheading the so-called war on drugs and pushing for the Controlled Substances Act.
Nixon won a second term with stunning mate Gerald Ford, though the Watergate scandal forced him to resign, making him the first and only American President to do so. Nixon's time in office also saw him pass several progressive environmental policy efforts, including the formation of the Environment Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act, and the Endangered Species Act, which remain essential pieces of legislation and organizations that work to keep land and air clean from pollution and other contaminants. Nixon also believed in resorting rights to indigenous American tribes by giving them greater self-determination and rescinding the so-called termination policy under which tribal groups were forced to assimilate into American culture instead of choosing their own cultural identity.
This photograph remains an enduring tribute to a man whose legacy and influence would shape the American political, cultural, and legal landscape for decades following his resignation.
