Ronald Wilson Reagan was a prominent American actor turned politician who served two terms as president during what would be known as the Reagan Era from 1981 to 1989, He became considered one of the most prominent conservative figures in American political history. Reagan was raised in northern Illinois and graduated from Eureka College in 1932 with a degree in broadcasting before relocating to California, where he became a well-known actor, eventually becoming the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1947 to 1952 as well as 1959 and 1960. Reagan became the Governor of California in 1966, sparking what would be one of the most revered careers in the modern Republican Party.
Reagan's victory over Jimmy Carter in the 1980 presidential race was a significant turning point in American politics. In his first term, he implemented the so-called 'Reagonomics,' an economic policy that included deregulation, tax cuts, and reduced government spending during a period of stagflation. His second term was marked by extensive foreign affairs, including the bombing of Libya in 1986, the Iran-Contra scandal, and opening talks with the Soviet Union by speaking with then-leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The Reagan Presidency also saw the end of the Cold War and the collapse of Soviet communism in Russia.
