The most populous city in Tennessee, Nashville is widely known for its vibrant music scene and is often referred to as "Music City." The city was originally named after Francis Nash, a prominent general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Founded in 1789, when the territory was still part of North Carolina, Nashville experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location along the Cumberland River. This vital waterway supported a thriving port and contributed to the city's expansion throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, setting the stage for the population boom that brought the metro area to more than two million residents in the modern era.
This map was produced during the American Civil War, when Nashville became a key strategic target for both Union and Confederate forces. In 1862, it became the first Confederate state capital to fall to Union troops and remained under Union control until the war's conclusion in 1865. Though occupied, the city continued to face threats from Confederate forces throughout the conflict. Illustrated by Professor G.H.
