Additional Information
Illustrated and published by one of the pioneering artists of the birds-eye perspective style, Albert Ruger, this unique depiction of South Bend shows it a period of significant transformation. Published only one year after the city was officially incorporated, one month after the Confederate surrender that effectively ended the American Civil War. After it was initially settled in the 1820s by fur traders who established trading posts in the region, South Bend had grown to become the fourth largest city in Indiana by the latter portions of the nineteenth century.
Its location on the banks of the St. Joesph’s River allowed it to enjoy a great deal of prosperity during the 1800s, and the iconic Notre Dame University was founded just outside the city in 1842. The river access would also allow for a thriving manufacturing economy to develop as industrialization raced across the United States in the lead to the turn of the century. Birdseye perspectives were a popular illustration style and were used to attract residents and merchants alike. During this time, South Bend had drawn a diverse range of immigrants from across Europe, primarily Italy, Sweden, Poland, Ireland, and Germany. These immigrants established neighborhoods based on cultural values, many of which exist to this day.
Due to their distinctive aesthetic and classic style, bird-eye perspectives are immediately recognizable and transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. These have become some of the most notable depictions of nineteenth-century America.
