Additional Information
Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, Saint Cloud was experiencing a period of transformative growth in the years following the conclusion of the American Civil War as residents flocked to the region eager for work in the growing manufacturing industries as well as opportunities to establish farms and dairies in the fertile areas surrounding the city. Saint Cloud was opened up to settlement for Europeans in 1851 after Minnesota was organized as a territory in 1849. The earliest residents utilized Saint Cloud's central location in the area to create way stations for travelers that were crossing the region bound for destinations in the Pacific Northwest.
Produced by Albert Ruger, this bird's eye perspective bears a distinctive style that Ruger developed as a pioneer of the form and one of its earliest adopters. Panoramic maps would become one of the most popular ways to market towns and cities across America to entice residents and merchants alike by featuring prominent local businesses and economic opportunities as well as natural features and civic buildings. Ruger's productions would inspire numerous lithography firms across the United States to produce similar works during the latter parts of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
This bird's eye perspective immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an enduring bond between the past and present. Saint Cloud was first incorporated in 1856 and, by the time of this publication, had become a thriving hub for the fur trade as steamboats ferried the goods to Southern ports in New Orleans.
