Situated on the banks of the Taunton River, the first successful ironworks in the Plymouth Colony was founded in 1656. The Taunton Iron Works would operate for two hundred years until finally closing in 1876. Known for producing fine silver products, Taunton came to be known as the Silver City. Taunton was also home to several other textile mills and industrial factories, which attracted immigrants from other New England towns as well as Western Europe and Ireland who established communities and neighborhoods, many of which endure to this day. Throughout the nineteenth century, Taunton was a significant shipping point for shipment to the rest of the nation via the River.
Produced and published by Oakley Hoopes Bailey, this stunning birds-eye perspective shows the city in a period of prosperity and transformation as the nation neared the turn of the twentieth century. Bailey was one of the most prolific panoramic map producers and had a career that spanned more than five decades.
