Located thirty-five miles northwest of Chicago, this birds-eye perspective of Elgin, Illinois, depicts the city in a period of significant transformation as the nation approached the turn of the twentieth century. Rapid technological advancements in manufacturing and transportation saw the city expanding as part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The region was first settled during the early portions of the nineteenth century by English, Irish, and Scottish immigrants who were attracted by the fertile soil on the banks of the Fox River. The city saw the foundation of numerous dairies, and the iconic Borden milk company was established in 1866.
Later in the nineteenth century, the city became known for producing some of the finest watches in the United States. The immediately recognizable clocks at Union Station in Chicago bear the name of the Elgin Watch Company. Birdseye perspectives were widely popular during the nineteenth century and served as marketing materials for towns and cities across the nation to entice residents and merchants alike. These productions bear a distinctive style and unique aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present.
