Produced during a period of significant economic growth in the cattle industry, which Texas had come to dominate in the latter portions of the nineteenth century, this depiction of Montgomery County remains an enduring representation of the area north of the United States' fourth largest city, Houston, before the turn of the twentieth century when vast oil reserves would make the region one of the most prosperous in the nation. Montgomery County is home to Conroe and was created by the Republic of Texas in 1837. The region experienced considerable growth following the conclusion of the American Civil War as demand for cattle, timber, and cotton was fueled by growth in northern cities and increased the demand for raw goods.
This map was produced under the guidance of Texas Land Commissioner William C. Walsh and bears a distinctive style emblematic of government cartographical productions of the era. The map's classic aesthetic immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Texas had seceded from the Union in 1861 before joining the Confederacy, and after the Union defeated the Confederate forces, many soldiers, including Walsh, returned to their home states.
By the time of this map's production, the region had experienced population growth and became an essential part of the Houston metropolitan area.
