Produced and published by one of the most prolific American cartographers of the nineteenth century Henry Wellge, this detailed depiction of Sioux City depicts the iconic town in a period of significant growth and transformation as the nation neared the turn of the twentieth century. Located at the navigational head of the Missouri River, Sioux City was an integral part of local trade throughout the nineteenth century. Sioux City was planned in 1854 as expansion throughout the American West continued to attract residents from the Northeast, South, and Western Europe looking to establish businesses and farms in the prairies associated with the Iowa landscape.
Wellge was one of five American cartographers responsible for producing more than half of all bird's eye perspectives in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress. Wellge's panoramic maps featured incredible detail and remain some of the most recognizable productions from the era. This depiction was produced during Wellge's most prominent period in the 1880s and bears his signature style and aesthetic, which features a stately elegance and fine lines with minimal colorization, giving these pieces an elevated appearance. Wellge did not focus on a particular region and is well known for his perspective map of Bangor, Maine which captures the shift to steam-powered ships and a move away from traditional sailing vessels.
This piece immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a link to one of the most iconic places in the American West as it became a regional hub in the late nineteenth century.
