Additional Information

Commissioned by the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée railway during the 1920s, this vivid travel poster by celebrated French artist Roger Broders promotes automobile tourism through the French Alps. The composition depicts sightseers and their guide aboard a touring coach, surveying the magnificent alpine route stretching from the Mediterranean to the high mountains.

The Route des Alpes represented a bold solution when extending railway lines through the steep Alpine foothills proved prohibitively expensive. The railway company instead transformed ancient mountain pathways and trade routes into serviceable roads, creating a 651-kilometer automobile journey connecting Lake Geneva at Evian to the Mediterranean at Nice.

Broders, trained at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, became the foremost French travel poster artist of the interwar period. The railway company sponsored his travels to each destination, ensuring authentic depictions. Over thirteen years he created approximately sixty-five distinctive compositions promoting locations along their extensive network.

This remarkable poster offers a vivid window into the dawn of European automobile tourism, when adventurous travelers first conquered the alpine passage from the Mediterranean to the high peaks. A distinguished addition to any collection celebrating French travel art, transportation heritage, and early Art Deco design.
