Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1899, Teller began his legendary partnership with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1928, eventually painting virtually all of the company's celebrated calendar scenes through the 1950s. His meticulous attention to detail and dramatic use of light and shadow made him the definitive artistic voice of America's most powerful railroad.
The poster appeared during a transformative period for Washington, as the Jefferson Memorial neared completion in 1943 and the National Mall continued its evolution into the monumental landscape recognized today. The Pennsylvania Railroad's Northeast Corridor service connected Philadelphia, New York, and Baltimore directly to the capital, making it the preferred route for millions of visitors.
